Map of Montgomery county from a book I found at the NC Archives. I forgot to write down the book's title, sorry!
New (Old) pictures from my collection for your enjoyment. I would love to add your photos to this blog - especially relatives not represented here from both sides of the family. We all know how the Ophir community knew each other and went to church with each other, helped each other during harvest time on the farms, etc. There must be so many pictures you could all share. I would love to allow you to upload your own to the site and will figure out if I can do this or not. Enjoy! Here is a photo of Clyde and Mildred Davis with their sons, Sammy and Jimmy, taken on their couch in their home on Flint Road, Ophir. I am not sure of the year but it looks like the 60's.
Bill Diffee (tallest in back), Betty Sue Diffee, Sammy Davis in front holding Danny (I think), and Jimmy Davis on the front lawn of the homeplace during the 40's. Alton and Broadice Hunsucker Davis with Daniel Edward, their only son. This was taken in the front room of the house I think.
Bill Diffee, son of Elgie and Roy Diffee. Elgie was the daughter of Sarah and Nish W. Davis, of Ophir, NC. Bill married my mother, Jeanne Brooks Diffee, resided in Burlington, NC all his life until his death at 78 years old of natural causes. Jeanne now lives with me, her daughter, in Greenville, NC with my husband and pets. She is 81 years old. This is a picture of my Grandmother, Elgie Davis Diffee, holding my father's hand, William Roy (Bill) Diffee. My father was a twin, the smaller of the two. My Grandmother lost the twin son a couple of days after he was born. She is stoically posing for this picture despite her grief. I am very impressed by this picture and know that she suffered a lot from that loss the rest of her life. This is a picture of my Grandmother, Elgie and her younger sister, Grace - supposedly posing as Bonnie and Clyde (not really!) This was during the 1920's when they were teens. I love this picture! This is a picture of me at 3 years old, approximately. The year would be 1956. I am standing in the front yard of the someplace on Flint Road in Ophir, NC.
My parents, Jeanne and Bill Diffee on their wedding day, December 1, 1951
Pleasant Saunders, my Great Grandmother Sarah's brother, owned this house (to my knowledge) which is located in the Uwharrie National Forest along a river. It was built in the late 19th century. If anyone in the family has more information about this house and it's history I would love to have it!
The last 3 pictures are : 1- My father, Bill Diffee, Elgie Davis Diffee's son, Great Grandmother Sarah Saunders Davis with my brother Scott, myself on her chair and my cousin Lisa Boswell Venners (Betty Sue Diffee Boswell Haywood's daughter) on the floor beside her. Betty Sue lives in Burlington with her husband Reece Haywood. Her first husband Clyde died around 9 years ago from cancer. Lisa and her husband and two boys live in Virginia. The last picture is of my Grandmother, Elgie as a baby. This picture is extremely valuable to me because I think it was hard to get a picture taken that long ago that turned out as clear as this one did! I think my Aunt Betty owns the picture.
The home in the first few pictures has been abandoned since sammy’s Passing. What a shame this was a beautiful home many many years ago
